In common practice; hearth, kitchen and hedge witch are all used fairly interchangeably. Most practitioners of this sphere use a combination of the three to describe what it is that they do. Hearth witchcraft is essentially a magickal practice which seeks to infuse the home with loving, nourishing energy. Traditionally the hearth was the heart of the home. It was where food was cooked, it was the primary heating source, and a place to gather round to tell stories (especially in winter when that would have been the cosiest spot to be), and in many homes this energy still holds true even though the modern hearth looks a bit different.

In more modern housing our hearths now are represented by an electric or gas stove. Heating systems in many homes no longer revolve around a singular fireplace to heat the entire home. Even still, in some homes, fireplaces and wood stoves often provide a great supplementary source of heating. Considering these modern adaptations to the hearth, hearth witchcraft has grown alongside and come to mean more of a magick that encompasses the entire home.

In this aspect then hearth witchcraft is the practice of weaving magick throughout the home, whether you’re in the kitchen cooking up some kitchen magick, creating a cosy recharging atmosphere in the living room, or a restful space in the bedroom.

𝔏𝔒π”ͺ𝔬𝔫: A shout out to lemon here (even though it’s not an herb) because it’s one of my fav green beings to work with in the home. Magickally, lemon has an uplifting, refreshing energy that can add a bit of zest to the energy in your home. Yep pun definitely intended haha!

π”…π”žπ”°π”¦π”©: There’s an old saying that goes β€˜no evil goes where basil grows’, working with basil lends a protective energy to the home. It’s also one of the herbs that I find grows easiest and is a great addition to cooking.

Crystals and earthen stones (stones from the garden or beach) are another magickal way to nourish hearth. While putting your crystal grid together, focus on the energy that you are bringing into your home to infuse them with your magick as well.

Once your crystals are all arranged in a way that feels right for spirit you can also place your hands around them and speak any spell words that feel right while visualising that particular energy filling your home.

An important part of hearth witchery is cleaning. While cleaning isn’t generally pictured as the go-to activity of fun, hearth and home magick benefit greatly from a loving, magickal clean. When your home feels clean it uplifts the energy and allows it to flow more freely. It creates a space you want to be in, a space you want to recharge and rest in. Bringing magickal mindfulness to your cleaning helps to maintain and continue to nourish and refresh the energy of hearth and home.

For an extra dash of magick when cleaning, incorporate essential oils. This can be can be a lovely way to infuse your home with the magickal properties of herbs. Making homemade cleaning solutions is another way to weave in some hearth magick that is also gentle on the environment. Using eco-friendly cleaning supplies when availability and budget offers is also a great option.

The main thing to keep in mind when weaving cleaning magick is your energy. While essential oils are a lovely addition, the only aspect you really need to weave hearth magick while cleaning is you and your energy.

As you dust, sweep, vacuum, or mop visualise the old energy being released. Then when you’re all done, visualise your space filling up with loving, healing, nourishing, refreshing, energising, or recharging vibes or any energy that feels right to infuse the space you’ve just cleaned with the energy you feel your hearth is seeking.

As the traditional place and method by which food was cooked, hearth witchery and kitchen witchery are closely intertwined. Both seek to create nourishment in the home, one practice through cooking or baking the other through nourishing the environment of home.
